Home Firearms Safety course in development for East Atlanta/SAND communities

Noting there has been an increased interest in firearms ownership in the community in the wake of recent, well-publicized violent crimes, No Victims is testing the waters and gauging interest in a home firearms safety course for the EAV/SAND community.

Home Firearms Safety is a non-shooting course and teaches participants the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for the safe handling and storage of firearms and ammunition in the home. This is a three- to four-hour course for safe gun handling that is conducted in the classroom only. Students are taught three rules for safe gun handling; primary causes of firearms accidents; firearm parts; how to unload certain action types; ammunition components; cleaning; care; and safe storage of firearms in the home. This course is a good one for anyone new to firearms, for non-shooters who live in a home with a  firearm used primarily by someone else or for anyone of any experience level who wants to increase their proficiency in the safe handling of firearms.

A highilght of this course (and part of the fun) is the opportunity for participants to engage in hands-on loading and unloading exercises with a large variety (at least a dozen) of different firearms of different designs and action types.  No Victims’ volunteer instructor even offers a “bonus round” opportunity to figure out how to unload and render safe a few unusual and historically interesting firearms that might be found in some random relative’s basement or attic.

As with everything No Victims’ volunteer instructor teaches for the community, this course would be  offered for only the cost of participant materials (about $8) plus a share of any costs associated with obtaining a venue (see below).  Timing likely would be mid to late January and enrollment limited to 12 participants unless another certified instructor also is willing to teach for free.

Venue is TBD. This course cannot be taught in a chrurch or school facility as actual firearms (instructor-provided ones only!) will be used in the course. As such, the venue will need to be a non-school or non-church commercial property or a private home with sufficient space for seating, presentation and several firearms workstations. NO LIVE AMMUNITION WILL BE PRESENT OR PERMITTED IN THE VENUE FOR THIS COURSE.

In accordance with Georgia and Federal law, participants in this course must be elligible to own a firearm (no convicted felons, no person who has been involuntarily committed to a mental health facility, no person convicted of or under indictment for family violence crimes, etc.).

Please click here to contact No Victim’s author and volunteer instructor email me to indicate your potential interest and preferred timing (Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon, Sunday morning, Sunday afternoon) for such a course.  If you can offer or suggest a potential venue, or are a POST-certified, active or retired military-certified firearms instructor or NRA-certified firearms instructor willing to assist teaching this course, please indicate this in your message as well.
