Five Things Every Teen Should Know

About Gun Safety

Barely a day goes by when there isn’t a news story about a teenager bringing a firearm to school, a teenager being injured or killed by a firearm, or a teenager causing injury or death with a firearm. As with most risk factors for teens, a little knowledge can go a long a way. Developed originally at the request of a youth group advisor, “Five Things Every Teen Should Know About Gun Safety” speaks directly to teenagers about how to stay safe in situations where a gun is present. This 30-minute presentation is for all teenagers – no matter how they or their parents feel personally about guns.

Please have your teen join a parent and volunteer certified firearms safety instructor for this free, 30-minute presentation that can reduce their risk of firearms-related injury or death.

At this presentation, teens will learn about:

  • The reasons guns are never a way to express emotion
  • That it is OK to tell if someone has a gun who shouldn’t or somewhere they shouldn’t
  • That having a plan for what to do if someone starts shooting is key to survival,
  • Three “always” rules of safe gun handling can help keep them safe
  • Why trying to help someone put down a gun and not knowing how can do more harm than good.

Please consider hosting a free session of this presentation at your teen’s school, a Parent Teacher Association meeting, house of worship, youth group meeting, or community center. Alternatively, a presenter package containing the presentation itself, speaker notes, and a promotional flyer template is available for those inidividuals who would like to bring this presentation to their communities themselves.
