Crime Prevention

Experts agree that the single most important step toward ensuring your personal safety is making the decision to refuse to be a victim. That means that you must have an overall personal safety strategy in place before you need it.  One of the most effective ways to do so historically has been to attend a Refuse To Be A Victim(R) seminar. Matthew is a Certified Refuse To Be A Victim Instructor and offers to lead workshops exclusively through a partnership with S.A.F.E.  (Safe Atlanta For Everyone) at no cost to the participants except a nominal fee for the required student materials.

Co-sponsoring organizations provide a venue for the workshop, handle participant registration and collection of payment for participant materials. If you are interested in co-sponsoring a Refuse To Be A Victim® Workshop for your organization’s members, please download and review the SAFE Refuse To Be A Victim(R) Seminar Co-Sponsorship Guide  (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader, free download here) and complete the Co-Sponsorship Application in Appendix E. SAFE’s Refuse To Be A Victim® Co-Sponsorship Program Coordinator will contact you to discuss sponsorship details and potential timing for your workshop.

Refuse To Be A Victim® was developed in the early 1990s in response to nationwide requests for crime prevention seminars. Refuse To Be A Victim® seminars teach methods to avoid dangerous situations and prevent criminal confrontations. Experts agree that the most important factor in surviving a criminal attack is to have an overall safety strategy before you need it. Each 3-4 hour Refuse To Be A Victim® workshop teaches methods to avoid dangerous situations and prevent criminal confrontations and covers a number of important topics:

  • Home Security
  • Technology Security
  • Automobile Security
  • Personal Safety
  • Personal Protection Devices (non-lethal)
  • Self-Defense Classes

Optional modules are available to cover Workplace Safety, Teaching Children About Personal Safety and Personal Safety for the Elderly and Disabled.

Seminar participants are presented with a variety of common‑sense crime prevention and personal safety strategies and devices they may integrate into their daily lives. Tens of thousands of men and women have benefited from the program’s life-saving message and members of the law enforcement community and state governments nationwide have endorsed the program. The goal of these workshops is to enable participants to develop a personal safety plan and minimize their chances of becoming a crime victim. It is not a hands-on self-defense class. Content regarding personal protection devices and self-defense classes is limited to discussing options and how to go about evaluating them.

Refuse To Be A Victim® was developed as a program of the National Rifle Association to take advantage of their world-class training development methodology and instructor certification techniques. However, Matthew chooses to remove the minimal firearms-related content in the workshops he leads unless it is specifically requested.

With over thirteen hundred instructors nationwide, seminars have been presented in 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad and Tobago. Tens of thousands of men and women have benefited from the program’s life-saving message. Members of the law enforcement community and state governments nationwide have endorsed the program.
